Driving Theory Test - What to Expect

Once you've received your provisional license, it's time to start thinking about preparing for your theory test.

You need to pass your driving theory test before you can apply for your practical test.

It will help you and your instructor if you've already begun studying for your theory test before you start your driving lessons as this will give you a good knowledge of road signs, junctions and the general rules of the road.

The driving theory test is split into two parts and you must pass both parts in the same test session in order to pass overall.

Multiple Choice Questions

Using a touch screen computer, you'll be asked 50 questions on various aspects of driving and given multiple choice answers to choose from.

You'll have 57 minutes to complete this part of the test and need to get 43 out of the 50 questions correct in order to pass.

There are many books available to help you prepare specifically for this part of the test and there are also mock tests available online to help you decide when you're ready to sit it for real.

Your instructor will also be able to answer any questions about the theory test you may have.

The Hazard Perception Test

The hazard perception part of the driving theory test consists of 14 video clips which show a variety of everyday driving situations.

Through clicking a mouse button you have to identify the early stages of a hazard that's developing in the clip you're watching. 13 clips will have one developing hazard and one of the clips will have two, giving a total of 15 hazards.

The maximum score for each hazard is five and will depend on how early you identify it developing on the screen.

In order to pass this part of the test you need a score of 44 or more out of 75.

Have You Passed?

After completing the hazard perception test you can leave the exam room where you'll then be given your results by a member of the test centre staff.

Passing your theory test is the first step to getting behind the wheel on your own; you'll also need to commit to a series of practical driving lessons.

Driving theory test tip: Don't apply for your theory test until you're completely ready. Practise the mock tests as much as possible and only when you consistently achieve a pass mark should you book the real test. It costs you money
